Lost in IKEA, Found in Conversation

Last weekend, my family and I went to IKEA with a very specific mission: Buy one thing and come back peacefully. Do not buy random storage boxes just because they do not exist at home.

Naturally, within fifteen minutes, I had forgotten my mission and was walking through IKEA like a confused goat. That’s when I noticed something.

Every sales representative had “Hej” written on their T-shirts.

My brain was prepared to do what many other brains would: reach for the phone and google what it meant. My thumb was already halfway to opening the browser when something unusual happened.

I paused.

Right in front of me stood a sales executive, smiling the way IKEA people do, like they know you will eventually buy something you never planned to. Do you know what I did next?

I spoke to a human.

Excuse me,” I said, pointing at the T-shirt. “What does ‘Hej’ mean?

Her face lit up. “It means ‘hello’ in Swedish!” she said.

But the conversation didn’t stop there. In the next few minutes, I learned:

  • How it’s pronounced (“hey,” not “hedge,” thankfully)
  • Why IKEA uses Swedish words everywhere
  • Which section people get lost in the most (truth: almost all of them – LOL)

We exchanged some jokes and shared some furniture philosophy. And that’s when it hit me.

I came for a product.
I left with a conversation.

A Tiny Talesmith Learning:
There’s no doubt that the fastest answer is on Google, ChatGPT, etc. But the warmest answer is right in front of you.

Talk to people. They don’t just give information. They give stories.

And honestly, when was the last time Google smiled back at you when you asked something you weren’t aware of?
